In testing conditions at Minehead & West Somerset GC, the Red Army made a positive start to their Channel League campaign. Somerset overcame a strong challenge from Wiltshire to record an 8½-6½ win. With 3 members of the successful 2017 squad moving into the professional ranks, opportunities have opened up for players to stake their claim for places in the South West Week side.
The morning foursomes were close, and ended up 3-2 in our favour. Curtis Edwards and Andy Ferris got Somerset off to a flying start in game 1 before Wiltshire bounced back to take the points in games 2 & 3. Sam Sloman & Jeremy Larcombe scored an emphatic 5&4 win in game 4 to level the points before debutant Tom Trowbridge and Johnny Grace turned the match in our favour with a 2&1 win in the final game.
Wiltshire pulled back to 3 points each in the singles when Garry Slade beat Curtis Edwards in game 1, before wins from Sam Sloman, Phil White and Craig Adams gave Somerset a 3 point lead. Wiltshire were never able to turn the match around, as further points followed for Somerset from Jack Palmer and Tom Trowbridge, with Jeremey Larcome supplying a half point.
Next week we are travelling to Teignmouth to take on Devon.
