Match Commentary
In every respect, Enmore Park proved to be an excellent venue for this fixture. Pre-event liaison was first class and the course was in excellent condition and well presented – no mean feat given the drought conditions which had prevailed for so long. The Club also provided honorary starters for both the foursomes and singles matches. The hospitality was enjoyed by all and a letter of thanks, on behalf of both teams has been sent to Enmore Park
The match was played in, at times, blustery conditions with intermittent rain and players’ skills were duly tested by some demanding pin positions
The am foursomes resulted in our edging 3 – 2 ahead. The most notable performance coming from Bob Tye and Neil Whisler who “whitewashed” their opponents 5 &4 – a very rare occurrence in the SCL
The respective line-ups for the pm singles revealed no significant differences in approach by the team captains. Unfortunately for us, there, any similarity ended. Only three matches made it to the 18th green producing two halved matches (for Ron Schroder and Kelvin Green) and a narrow loss for Martin Cashnella. Matt Lazenby proved to be our sole winner.
Of the six other matches, all of which were lost, only one (Steve Palmer) made it as far as the 17th green. Undoubtedly, the Cornwall players performed well but, it’s axiomatic that the majority of our players were unable to respond to the challenged posed by the play of their respective opponents. Further analysis must await our post-match evaluation to be carried out by the players
Next up, we travel to Creigiau GC, Cardiff on 22/08 where Glamorganshire will be seeking to avenge their loss to us of last year.
