Match Commentary
The match was played in fine weather over a course that was in excellent condition and had been well prepared for this fixture. The Tall Pines team provided a clear space before the start of the am foursomes enabling all five matches to crack round without any delays. As a result, the planned timings for lunch and the pm singles were easily adhered to and the fixture formalities concluded slightly ahead of schedule
Our thanks to Alex Murray and his Tall Pines team
Our am foursomes line-up featured some established pairings and some new combinations with four of the five matches finishing on the last (9th) green. A fine win by Danny Dowell and Matt Lazenby in the anchor match ensured that we went into the lunch break all even
In the pm singles, early indications were that the match would be a desperately closely fought affair – and so it proved. Fine, successive wins by our “middle order” – Kelvin Green, Bob Tye and Steve Palmer gave us a slight edge. We then needed 1.5 points from the final four matches to get to the match winning total of 8 points. That was precisely what was delivered – no more, (which proved very taxing to our supporters) and, critically, no less. The vital points being secured - both on the final green - by Paddy Maclennan (a one hole win) and Matt Lazenby with a nerveless halved match. Facing a tricky 10ft putt to win his singles, Matt took due account of the “noises off” re the overall match position and tapped his ball to the side of the hole to obtain the half point needed for the team’s overall victory
Match captain, Paddy Maclennan pronounced himself well pleased with his team’s efforts
Note: The Seniors have a reputation for working any SGU Officers who may attend our matches rather hard. So it proved at Tall Pines with County President, Paul Middleton acting as starter for both the foursomes and the singles
