The U 18s Greenaway Trophy match  v Cornwall was contested at Mendip Spring GC on the 26th July.  The weather was glorious with bright sunshine and temperatures in the high 20’s. The course was well presented and represented a stiff challenge to the players from both Counties. Thanks to the Greenkeeping staff for producing great greens in very testing conditions.

Cornwall, newly crowned South west Champions, got off to a great start in the morning foursomes with wins in the first two games. Liam O’Mara and Lewis Coward took the third game. A very closely fought fourth game finished all square with Michael Nicholls and Alfie Jubb playing well. The final game went to Cornwall who took a 3 1/2 - 1 1/2 lead into the afternoon singles.

The home team got off to a good start in the singles and took two and half points from  the first three games .Huxley Howell holed a great put on the 17th to level his match and held on for a half at the 18th. Captain Jake Bovington won the second game 3 + 1 and Louis Archer played well to secure an impressive 6 + 5 win. At that stage the majority of the remaining singles were in the balance.  Some great golf resulted in Cornwall coming out on top in six of the remaining games. Michael Nicholls secured our only other point.

Charlie Goss was 4 up after 12 but some impressive play resulted in him being caught and a thirty foot put on the last earned Cornwall the win.

Alex Marshall and Jack Coward from the U14s played well and were worthy opponents for their older opposition.

It was a shame that the four Mendip Spring players from the County U18s/16s, including Dylan Xanh and Ollie Brimfield, were unavailable for this fixture as their knowledge of the course would have been valuable but all credit to the boys who played and performed well.

Cornwall deserved their 10 - 5 win and will look to secure the Greenaway Trophy with a win against Devon in their next game. We also wish them every success at the EG County finals later this year.

Many thanks to SGU Chairman Tommy Tulk and Competitions Secretary Richard Dix for their support on the day.   A very big thank you to all at Mendip Spring for looking after us all so well.
