On another sun drenched day at Wells, a young Somerset Under 14 side were outgunned by our visitors in this Jack Roberts Memorial League fixture. There was scarcely a cloud in the sky as the teams began 27 holes of golf, starting with 9 holes of foursomes.

Our opening pair of Peter & Finley lost their game 2 &1 before the re-united dream team of Owen and Zane restored parity, winning 3&2. Game 3 was another win for Cornwall as Theo L and Theo J, (a very last-miute replacement - thanks Theo!) went down 3&1. The final game could have gone either way, but was settled on the last green in favour of our visitors. Joss and Wills battled to the end, and the result hung in the balance but finished 1 up to Cornwall. 3-1 to Cornwall at the interval.

After a much needed break for lunch, the match continued with the afternoon singles. The ground was vey hard which resulted in some unfortunately big bounces from the fairway and into trouble. Despite the tricky conditions, there was some very good golf on display as the Somerset boys battled both the heat and the opposition in trying to overcome the deficit.

Peter had an unfortunate bounce into the penalty area on the 17th after getting his game back to all square. Cornwall won both 17 and 18 to win 2 up. Finley played really well, opening up an early lead that resulted in a win 6&4. Owen showed his usual determination but eventually lost 1 down on the 18th. Joss came up against an in form opponent in losing 3&2, but if the golfing gods had been a little kinder, the result could have been a bit closer.

Zane also had more than his share of misfortune with putts refusing to find the bottom of the hole as he lost 3&2. An unfortunate incident on the 14th could have disrupted Theo J as one of the opposition plad Theo's ball by mistake, leading to Theo playing a wrong ball and losing the hole. To his credit, he shrugged it off, won the next and the game 2&1.

Fate played a hand in the final two games as Cornwall finished strongly Theo L had some unlucky bounces in losing 3&2, and errant tee shots on 17 and 18 put paid to Wills and his chance of getting something out of his game.

In the end, this was a well deserved win for Cornwall. On the day, they were stronger than us and are to be congratulated on their performance The match was played in good spirit and our boys did themselves proud. Thanks to the Cornwall team for travelling up for the match and we look forward to next year

Thanks also to the Members and Staff at Wells for making us so welcome, particularly to the Catering team for the food which was enjoyed by all. The greenstaff have done a great job in keeping the putting surfaces in such good condition during this prolonged dry spell.

Thanks to all of Team Somerset - players, parents and supporters for the day. Onwards to Folke Golf Club for our next match againd Dorset!
